Memory Care: Chromosome

Hello, and welcome back to another Memory Care Monday post. When I first started this blog, at the end of 2018, my most popular posts were these learn a new word a week posts. I don’t recall why I stopped doing them, but I got to #10 out of 100 on the list. Since I am over 50 and have been discussing Memory Care especially in relation to diet, I thought I would start these again.

It’s really easy to follow along. The goal is to learn the definition of a new word each week and then retain it, along with the other words that came before it. You can find the other words on the list under the memory care section of this blog. You can keep track any way you want. A note app on your phone, Google docs, handwritten in a journal, however, you wish to do so. Check out the cool journal below. Find a way to test yourself, and a day to do it on. There are several ways to memorize things. Writing them out several times, saying it out loud as you read it, making a song, etc.

This week’s word is Chromosome. There is even a cool video below to go with it. I am not going to tell you the definition per se. It is your job to find the word, define it, write it in a sentence if you want, find synonyms and antonyms, etc. Whatever will help you to remember it. Make a game of it, like Memory, and have someone play it with you. Keep track of the score, and whoever wins gets a pre-agreed prize, like coffee or something. All you would need is some blank recipe cards and a pen. I think I might do this, lol, it sounds fun.

If you would like to use my coaching services to help keep your memory fresh, or make it better, use the contact form below to message me for details. One way to improve Memory is to increase your physical activity. Check out my Walking Buddy Plan!

Memory Care Monday: How Memories are Made

Happy Memory Care Monday! I hope everyone had an amazing weekend. I worked all weekend, and I am still deciding if these 12 hour shifts are going to work well for me.

The video below is very interesting, and explains how our brains make memories.  It is not that long, about 10 minutes, so give yourself some new knowledge, and let me know if you remember the name at the beginning of the video.

If you have a goal of improving your memory skills, and would like to work with me to reach that goal, use the contact form below to message me.

Memory Care Monday: Revisit Old Memories With Photos

Updated 10/18/2021 Hello all my wonderful readers!  Today, for Memory Care Monday, I am going to tell you about one of my most favorite things, taking and looking at pictures.  Now these serve two different types of memory, short term, and long term.  Taking new pictures, and then looking at them in 6 months, or so, will help your short term memory.  Looking at old pictures, from say when you were a child, or your children were babies, will help with long term memory.  I love to pull out all my old pictures, long before smart phones, lol, and try to remember what we were doing, and why were we there.  My kids get a kick out of these pictures too, so it can be a great bonding activity.  Maybe you have a loved one who is starting to lose their memory.  This is a wonderful activity for them as well.  Even people who are already in the throws of Alzheimer’s can benefit from this walk down memory lane.  Have fun with it.  Make it a game, even.  Dress up like the style for that time period.  Learn the lingo of the day. There are many great ways to help your loved one with Dementia, or maybe you work with Dementia residents. I saw this cool photo album that you can add voice to. What a brilliant idea. If you need a gift idea for a loved one with Dementia check it out on Amazon. I will be looking at these for Christmas for a loved one in my family. This is not an affiliate link.

Baby books are kind of becoming obsolete, so start a blog when your baby is born.  It will always be there, unless you delete it.  I have had a homeschool blog ever since I started with my kinds way back in the 2nd grade.  I have graduated 1, and have 1 more to go.  I have so much fun looking back at all the wonderful, fun things we did to learn.  Some day my kids will show it to their kids, and maybe they will even get some tips if they decide to homeschool their kids.

Have a blessed Monday!  If you would like help in setting, and reaching your health, and wellness goals, use the communication form below to message me about my 30 day coaching plans!

Memory Care: Learn A New Word A Week

Welcome back, and Happy Memorial Day to all who serve this great country.  This week our word to memorize is deciduous.  Now maybe you have heard of deciduous trees.  That will give  you a clue if you don’t know what this word means.  Follow the steps below, and be sure to catch up with all of the other words in the series, by checking the archives.  These words will actually double as a homeschool lesson for my 10th grader next year.  She will be required to do all of the steps that I ask of you.

Get out your journal, or locate it on your electronic device.  Look up the definition of the word, deciduous.  Write the word and the definition 10 times each.  The go back and say the word, and definition out loud 10 times.  Use the word, deciduous in a sentence, and try to find a synonym for it.  You can draw a picture that describes the word, or write a paragraph using the word as many times as you can.  Then, go back over all the previous words.  See how many you already remember.  Write them out again, if you need to, to help improve remembering them.

If you would like to learn more ways to improve, or retain your memory skills, use the contact form below to message me.

Memory Care: Learn A New Word Each Week

I have been a lazy blogger this past week.  I only managed one post in that time period.  It was nice break, though, and I was kind of busy.  My daughter started horseback riding lessons, the AC was broken and had to be gutted and fixed, my son started his first job, and there were a ton of birthdays to attend.

But, now back to blogging.  I hope everyone is doing well.  This week is word #11, but it seems we have done so many more than that, lol.  The word this week is Chromosome.  I hope you have been following along, and studying all the previous words.  So, in your journal, or online tool, write the word, look up the definition, write it 10 times.  Then say it out loud 10 times.  Use the word in a sentence, try to think of a synonym, write a short paragraph using the word as many times as you can, or draw a picture of the word.  All of these things will aid you in remembering the word, and the definition.  Now go back over the previous 10 words, and say them 10 times each.  Do the other exercises, as well, if you are having a hard time remembering the words, and definitions.

Thursday, for the next issue of hurricane prep with kidney disease, I will discuss drinks.  I hope everyone has an amazing Tuesday!

If you would like to learn more ways to improve, or retain your memory message me using the contact form below.  I have room for 3 clients this month.

Memory Care: Learn A New Word A Week

I missed last week’s word, sorry about that.  Sometimes life gets a little crazy.  The word for this week, is, circumnavigate.  Don’t you love big fancy words?  Remember you should be keeping all the words in a journal, or online document.  I find if you write them, rather than type them it helps a lot in remembering them.  Hand writing is becoming extinct.  Write the word, and definition, 10 times each.  Then try to use the word in a sentence, find a synonym, draw a picture, or write a short paragraph using the word as many times as you can.  Then say the word, and definition out loud, 10 times each.  Go back over the other words, repeating 10 times each.  Test yourself to see how many you remember.  Are you following along?  How are you doing?

There are many other ways to help your memory.  If you would like to learn some other methods, use the contact form below to message me for a free meet and greet.  Tomorrow, or Wednesday I will put out my May calendar, and monthly special.

Memory Care: Learn A New Word A Week Challenge

OK, back to my regular scheduled posts.  This week, we are on our 10th word, Chicanery.  That means you will have memorized 10 words.  Are you testing yourself, to see if you are remembering them?  Write the word of the week, in your journal, 10 times each with the definition.  Then go back over it and say it 10 times out loud.  For some people saying it while you write it works even better.  Use the word in a sentence, and write out the sentence 10 times.   Now, go back over the other 9 words, say the word, close your eyes and see if you can visualize the definition.  Practice these each week, or more often if you are having a hard time remembering them.  How are you doing?  Leave me a comment, and let me know you have joined in.  All of the previous words can be found in the archives at the bottom of this blog.

If you would like to learn other ways to improve your memory, study habits, tips and tricks, use the contact form below to send me a message to set up a free email meet and greet, with assessment of your goals.

Memory Care Monday: Acumen

Updated 12/6/2021: As I continue to edit these old posts from when I first started this blog, I am mindful that I really stunk at this, lol. If you are a member of my Mailchimp newsletter then last Wednesday you would have received a link to the current list of words where you can print it and write in the definitions. Or, you can just copy them to whatever journal option you are using. Once I get all of the old posts updated, I will move on until all 100 words are included. I will only add a new word each week, so it will take a while, plenty of time to learn and recall them all. My newsletter goes out every two weeks and I will include a new free worksheet monthly with simple ways, or games to remember the words. Make sure you sign up for my newsletter to participate.

We are at week 4, already.  If you are following along you should be on the fourth word, there are a hundred total.  You can find the other posts by looking in the archives.  Remember, you should be writing the word, and the definition 10 times, then say it out loud 10 times.  Each week also review the previous words by saying them out loud 10 times.  You could also write down synonyms, and antonyms for the word, to help remember even better.  There are of course lots of ways to improve your memory.  If that is a goal of yours, click the contact button, send me a message to discuss my health coaching services. The word for this week is Acumen. The video below will describe the word Acumen and some ways to use it in a sentence.

Memory Care Monday: Abstemious

Updated 11/29/2021: As I continue to edit the old posts from this list, I have created a free printable with the current 15 words. You can print it, keep it in a journal, and write the definitions right on that paper. If you would like the free printable please sign up for my Mailchimp newsletter below. I will send it in each newsletter. After I have edited the current words covered, and I start adding new words, each month I will send a free printable with a kind of game or way to help remember the words. Do you remember the definition of words 1 and 2, abjure and abrogate? Leave the definitions in the comments if you do. Last year I shared Christmas gift ideas for people with CKD. This year watch for gift ideas for people with Dementia.

Welcome to week 3 of the Memory Care Challenge.  How are you doing?  Are you following along?  You still always can get in at any time.  Why do memory care challenges?  Because it keeps your brain healthy.  Dementia and Alzheimers are on the rise in this country, and one of the best things you can do to help lower your risk of getting those diseases is to exercise your brain.  There is a total of 100 words on this list, and it is a list I used with my high school son, and now my daughter.  I didn’t learn the list with him but am learning it with her.   Anytime you want to memorize something, write it 10 times, then say it out loud 10 times.  Each week I go back to the previous words and see if I remember them.  So, here is the word for week 3:  abstemious.  Do you already know what it means?  I kind of had an idea but wasn’t 100% sure.  This is a fun word.  Try to use it in a sentence too.  Leave me a comment, and let me know how you are doing. The short video below will help you out. I think abstemious is a very pertinent word around the holidays, lol.

There are other ways to improve memory.  I am still accepting new clients if you want to work on memory or any other health-related goals.  Use the contact button, at the bottom of this post to message me and set up a free meet and greet.

Exercise is a great way to keep your brain healthy. Check out my Walking Buddy Plan. Walk with me!

Memory Care Monday: Abrogate

Updated 11/15/2021: If you have been following along then you realize this is actually the week 2 word that I am now editing. I am editing all of the previous weeks before I move on to new words on the list. Remember, these are to help you keep your brain active. My new newsletter will go out Wednesday and I am hoping to have a worksheet for subscribers of all of the words covered so far.

How did you do on week 1?  Did you write the word, and definition 10 times, and then say it out loud 10 times?  I did, I hope you did too.  This is a great way to challenge your memory, and learn some new vocabulary words.  The word for week 2 is , abrogate.

Watch the very short video below to see what abrogate means, or you can look it up. There are many ways to memorize new words. Write the word, and definition, 10 times, then say the word and definition out loud 10 times. Each day repeat this with the word of the week and all previous words. Use a traditional paper journal or an online type of journal. I find actually writing them out the traditional way, rather than typing, is a much more effective way to remember them, but everyone learns differently. If you like to draw, draw a picture story explaining the word. If you like to write, create a poem, or short story with the word being the main topic of the story.

After I get to 10 words, I will post a kind of memory test to see how much I, and you if you like, remember.

Want to improve, or maintain your memory, using other techniques?  Use the contact button to email me, and set up a free meet and greet.  There is no obligation to purchase anything, and the meet and greet are always free.

Exercise is a great way to help prevent Dementia. Check out my Walking Buddy Plan.
